Will you be this week's winner?

Now Let's Talk About Crisp Delicious Corn!

It wouldn't be summer without freshly picked corn on the cob! We know corn is now available in markets year-round,but those locally grown varieties that you can purchase during the summer months taste the best - and are usually the least expensive!

Corn grows in "ears," each of which is covered in rows of kernels that are then protected by the silk-like threads called "corn silk" and encased in a husk - incidentally, we have a vendor who makes adorable dolls out of these!

Hot, fresh corn-on-the-cob is a worthy part of any healthful menu. The food ranking system at Worlds Healthiest Foods qualified corn as a good source of many nutrients including: thiamin (vitamin B1), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), folate, dietary fiber, vitamin C, phosphorus and manganese. What does this mean to you? Folate contributes to Cardiovascular Health. Thiamin may help you maintain your memory.

If purchasing corn at a farmer's market or roadside stand, make sure that if the corn is not refrigerated, it has at least been kept in the shade, out of direct sunlight. Look for corn whose husks are fresh and green and not dried out. You can test for the juiciness of the corn by taking your fingernail and pressing on a kernel. Corn that is fresh will exude a white milky substance.

Meet Our Vendors: Miles' Mess

"I wanted to do something that meant something. I decided on the Farmer's Market," says Scottsville Farmers Market's, 10-year-old, independent vendor Myles Tocci. "It is an honor to be a business man. Being [at  the market] and having some of my friends there and to interact with people just to say 'Have a nice day', cheers me up for the day."

Myles favorite thing to sell is donuts "because a lot of people but them. It's a good product for the morning. They just make you feel good. When we close up shop, I might grab a few from the basket and much them down real quick."

People like coming to Myles' stand to be greeted and cared for. To him, the person who is selling the product can be happy and joyful and makes somebody's day better. Stop by Myles' Mess, "I have donuts, blueberry loaf, ice tea, sometimes brownies. Next week I'll be able to say I'm selling iced coffee."

It is a delight to meet Myles on a Saturday morning. He has a  winning personality, takes customer appreciation very seriously and is very kind. Visit his table for fantastic homemade donuts, peppermint patty brownies, mini blueberry loafs, delicious mint-flavored iced tea and now iced coffee, too!
