Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Letter from the President of the Chamber to all of the members dated May 3rd, 2008::

Dear SCCC Member:

The new Saturday Farmer's Market, sponsored by the Scottsville Community Chamber of Commerce, had their Grand Opening today and it was a success beyond expectations.  Not only was the tent filled with vendors but a count of 400 visitors was recorded!  Of course, the beautiful weather was instrumental in bringing people out as were the horse drawn carriage rides and musical entertainment but it was proven that a Saturday Farmer's Market can work.

My thanks to the Chamber Economic Development Committee and especially Bebe Williams for their efforts in establishing the Saturday Market.  A special thanks also goes to the EDC for their very wise and wonderful choice of Michelle Maggiore as the Saturday Farmer's Market Manager.  Michelle has the personality and skills to turn the Saturday Farmer's Market into a huge Scottsville Event that will draw people for miles around.

So you don't miss out if you were not able to attend the Market today put every Saturday morning from 8 - 11AM on your calendar so you can come down to the Farmer's Market Tent and enjoy the wonderful produce, plants, baked foods and other homemade goods that our vendors supply.  It also a great atmosphere to just come and visit with your neighbors.

Sincerely,

Brian F. LaFontaine
President
Scottsville Community Chamber of Commerce

I would like to share some interesting news I learned at a statewide market manager's workshop this afternoon regarding the new law for value-added products typically found at Farmer's markets will be in effect July, 2008. it may or may not affect you and your business, but it is good to be aware of this new legislation:

Michelle Maggiore

Here is a link to the legalese version: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?081+ful+SB272ER

This is a simple overview of the new rules:

"A few things about the exemption from inspection that is sighted below. This exemption will be for people who are preparing from their own homes only and are sold from the individual preparing the product directly to a consumer. Therefore, if your business expand and you ever intend to sell product through a broker or through a store, this exemption may not be for you. Secondly, you will have to label every food you make with the "NOT FOR RESALEPROCESSED AND PREPARED WITHOUT STATE INSPECTION" label. I am not sure how consumers will perceive this label - it could be detrimental to your business. Finally, the last requirement (iii) stipulates that if you require a license for production of your product (for example acidified foods - pickles, salsas and other pickled products), you will still need to be inspected because acidified foods has special production guidelines. Basically, the exemption if for low risk products such as some bakery items (cookies, bread, some cakes) and jams/jellies that would not require other licensing."

In addition to this information from Joell, if you are interested in offering acidified foods as mentioned above, there is an upcoming food processing class being offered through Virginia Tech that will be offered in May. For more info/to register please contact:
